On Saturday the Marauders competed at the 3rd annual Capitol Cross Challenge, a much larger more competitive meet this year with the cancellation of the Stanford Invitational. In the Seeded varsity race featuring many top section, northern California, and a handful of out of state or southern California teams, the Marauders held their own, placing 7th in the team scoring. The team was led by sophomore Matt Strangio who won the race, holding off Garrett Gough of Nevada Union to win the race in 15:23.2 over the 5 km (3.1 mile) distance. The Marauders ran 10 in the race and showed their team depth with the top 6 runners finishing under 17 minutes and all 10 finishing at 17:35 or better. In the Frosh/Soph race, the Marauders placed 3rd behind Whitney and Pleasant Grove. The Frosh/Soph were led by Caelin Sutch 6th place and Martin Smith 8th place. Finally in the Open race, the Marauders showcased their depth, with Jordan Rahe leading the charge with his first place finish. In this race featuring a field of 393 runners, the Marauders place all 5 scores in the to 15 to run away with the team title with a low score of 31 points, well in front of second place Davis 60 points.
The top 24 runners will travel down next weekend to compete at the Clovis invitational run on the state meet course at Woodward Park. With some key runners missing action this past week with injuries, illnesses, and absences, the Marauders will look to improve on their performance and they begin their preparation for the League and Section Championship races which will take place in late October and November.
