Jesuit Speaker Series – Opioid Addiction
Thursday, February 15th - 7pm - Harris Center
Jesuit’s first Speaker Series is a forum on the current public health crisis related to opioid misuse and overdose deaths. This parent-only event (no students) will feature two speakers – Christina Nugent, current Jesuit parent, whose older son died from his addiction to opioids and Tom Russell, M.D., (‘86) who practices emergency medicine.
Mrs. Nugent will share her suggestions for prevention, precautions, the benefits of early intervention, and her belief that our Catholic faith can possibly make a life-saving difference when a person is working to overcome a substance use disorder related to opioid pain relievers.
Dr. Tom Russell (‘86) will provide insight on the complexities of this issue from a doctor’s point of view and share the science behind the addictive nature of opioids, why this medication is prescribed, what parents should consider when their sons/daughters are prescribed an opioid pain reliever, possible alternatives to pain management and how to dispose of unused opioid medication.
Parents, please join your Jesuit Community on Thursday, February 15th at 7:00 p.m. in the Harris Center to learn more about the risk of addiction to opioids and the opioid overdose epidemic.
