A Message from the New President of Jesuit High School

August 6, 2018

To the Students, Faculty, Staff, Parents, Alumni, Alumni Parents, Benefactors, and Friends of Jesuit High School:

I am honored and happy to begin my service as the 13th President of Jesuit High School today.  I humbly ask for your prayers and support as I follow in the footsteps of two women and ten Jesuits who have served as the President of our great school since it opened in 1963.

For St. Ignatius Loyola, the most fundamental spiritual disposition was gratitude.  Therefore, my first thought is to express my heartfelt gratitude to Lorraine Paul, who generously interrupted her retirement, to serve as President this past year.  From her 43 years as a Catholic educator, we were blessed to have Lorraine’s experienced leadership for 5 of those years, serving as Assistant Principal, Principal, and President.  Lorraine has done an outstanding job in leading the school, working with our Board of Trustees, communicating with parents, and engaging our many benefactors and friends.  We send Lorraine forth with our thanks and our prayers as she resumes her retirement and time with her family. I am especially grateful for her wise counsel during these months of preparation for this transition in the President’s Office.

I am committed to collaborating with our outstanding faculty, staff, administrators, and the Board of Trustees, and partnering with our parents to further the important mission of Jesuit High School in continuing to educate and form young men who are Open to Growth, Intellectually Competent, Religious, Loving, Committed to Doing Justice, and developing as leaders in our beautiful, yet increasingly turbulent world.

We want Jesuit students to be men of integrity and honesty; men who are respectful, faithful, generous, and grateful, so that when the time comes for them to graduate they will join the ranks of our now 10,000 alumni in being the leaders and agents of change for the good in our society—Men for and with Others who work for the Greater Glory of God through an active life of service to humanity.

I look forward to meeting people in the coming year, or in some cases, reconnecting with those whom I met and knew when I was Principal from 1998 to 2005.  I am so grateful for the generous support of those who believe in our Catholic and Jesuit values-based education of the whole person: mind, body, spirit, and soul.  Together we can build upon all the good that has happened at Jesuit High School over 55 years, and work hard to ensure that the future is filled with hope in what is to come.

Along with the other Jesuit ministries of Sacramento—Cristo Rey High School, and St. Ignatius Parish and School— Jesuit High School remains committed to that original vision of St. Ignatius:  finding God in all things and in all people, and serving the needs of the local Church as we seek to follow Jesus and proclaim the good news of God’s love.

In one of the prayers for the Feast of St. Ignatius, we pray: “Enrich us, Lord, with gifts of heart, mind, and spirit.  Make us all one with you in holiness and love, that we may discern your will and carry it out with constancy and faith.”

May God bless each of you and your loved ones, and may God continue to bless Jesuit High School.

Gratefully,

Rev. John P. McGarry, S.J.
