This past week saw Jesuit’s varsity water polo team play their toughest games of the season as they get ready for the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs. Friday and Saturday, the team traveled to Bellarmine High in San Jose to play in the Memorial Cup, one of the country’s  top high school water polo tournaments. The Marauders started off with a challenging assignment, drawing a first-round match up against the country’s  top prep water polo squad, Newport Harbor High School. Jesuit played tough throughout the game but ultimately fell by a final score of 3 to 17, getting goals from junior Ivan Soshnikov, senior Reed Caron,  and, in his first varsity game, sophomore Jacob Yi. After this loss, Jesuit followed up with a tough game against another of the country’s top high school programs, Corona Del Mar High from Newport Beach. Senior Joe Cavazos scored 5 of the team’s 6 goals in a hard-fought 6 to 12 loss.

Saturday, the Marauders played two very competitive games against Coronado High School, one of the San Diego area’s top water polo teams, and Woodrow Wilson High from Long Beach. In the Coronado game, Jesuit took a 5 to 4 lead into the 4th quarter before falling to the Islanders 5 to 7, with Caron and junior Cody Ferguson scoring 2 goals each in the loss. Jesuit closed out the tournament by playing yet another close game, again taking a 1-goal lead into the 4th quarter—this time against Long Beach Wilson. After losing their lead midway through the quarter, Jesuit fought back to tie the score at 10 with a little over a minute left. However, Long Beach scored the decisive goal in the game’s final minute to take the victory 11 to 10. Joe Cavazos led the Marauders with 4 goals before fouling out, and Caron contributed 2 goals in another good performance over the weekend. Jacob Yi continued to make an impact with 2 goals and an assist in the game, and senior David Harris contributed 2 assists and a field block in the loss.

After an 0 and 4 week, Jesuit’s overall record stands at 16 – 9 for the season. The coming week sees Jesuit travel to league and section rival Davis High School where they will face the Blue Devils in their final regular season game on Tuesday at 7 pm. Next week, Jesuit will compete in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs, with their first game likely to be either October 30 or November 1 at Jesuit.
