Global Studies is a survey of the culture and land of non-Western regions of the world. It is designed to broaden our perspectives as world citizens. We will examine the culture, history, politics, economics, and social systems of Africa, East Asia (India, China, and Japan), Latin America, and the Middle East. We will place special emphasis on identifying similarities and differences in these cultures, recognizing ethnocentric world views and understanding the impact of these cultures on the United States and visa versa.
Since this is a freshman course, we will also work to develop a core set of fundamental skills, the most important of which are critical reading, writing and thinking. Other skills we will develop are efficient note taking, close reading, and proper study strategies.
