Mathematics Preparation for Incoming Freshmen to Jesuit High School

Info for Incoming Freshmen

1. Algebra Challenge

Incoming freshmen wanting to challenge Algebra 1 (i.e., place into Geometry or above) need to have covered all the goals and objectives outlined in the Algebra 1 XL curriculum. We have also provided some sample Algebra 1 problems to illustrate how we’d like students to annotate answers (clearly showing all steps in a calculation) and also to show the style of questions one could expect to see on the Algebra 1 challenge exam (not intended to be an all inclusive list). Students who successfully challenge Algebra 1 will be placed in Geometry or Geometry XL.

Algebra 1 sample problems:

  • Combining fractions
  • Converting from one linear form to another
  • Multiplying powers with like bases
  • Dividing powers with like bases
  • Raising a product or a quotient to a power
  • Factoring trinomials
  • Simplifying complex rational expressions
  • Solving problems involving distance/rate/time
  • Using the elimination method solve a linear system
  • Dividing radical expressions
  • Rationalizing denominators
  • Graphing parabolas

2. Geometry Challenge

Incoming freshmen wanting to challenge Geometry need to have covered all the goals and objectives outlined in the Geometry XL curriculum.  We have also given some sample problems and proofs to illustrate how we’d like students to annotate answers (clearly showing all steps in a calculation) and to show the style of questions one could expect to see on the Geometry challenge exam.  Students who successfully challenge Geometry will be placed in Algebra 2 or Honors Algebra 2.

Geometry sample problems:

Sample Proofs covered in Geometry and Geometry XL
Worked sample problems from the Geometry Challenge Exam
Worked sample problems illustrating the difference between Geometry and Geometry XL
