Split Squad takes 8th at Stanford

The Jesuit Cross Country team split for two meets Saturday with the top 7 varsity runners competing at the Stanford Invitational and the rest of the squad competing locally at the Capital Cross Challenge at Haggin Oaks. The varsity team placed 8th in the race loaded with top teams from around the state. The group of seniors was led by Colin Ryan with his 34th place finish in 16:03. Antonio Vargas placed 43rd in 16:13 and Anthony Rogado ran 16:15 for 48th place. Gabe Lovely had a solid race in 61st in 16:22 while Chase Gordon rounded out the scoring in 16:44 for 92nd. Colin Brannan was 105th in 16:51 and Miles Worthen finished 130th in 17:09. Claremont from the Los Angeles area won the race, La Costa Canyon from the San Diego area was 2nd and St. Francis of of the Bay Area was 3rd.

The frosh-heavy Jesuit team took 2nd to the sophomore-heavy team from Whitney 54-70 in the frosh-soph 2 mile race at Capital Cross. Freshman Braden King placed 2nd overall in 10:52. Sophomore Michael Chambers placed 8th in 10:59, just ahead of freshman Tyler Offerman who was 11th in 11:03. Freshmen Cameron Cleland and Harley Sherman were 24th and 25th in 11:14 and 11:15, respectively, while freshman Gavin Joaquin took 32nd in 11:20 and sophomore Tommy Gee was 47th in 11:26.

The reserve varsity squad took 19th in the seeded race competing with 30 schools’ top 7 varsity runners. Senior Seamus Caslin led the group in 64th in 16:45 and junior Connor King was 69th in 16:49. Junior JT Leach was 113th in 17:17, senior Bobby Canalas was 128th in 17:25 and junior Talon Krieger was 134th in 17:27. Junior Martin Smith ran 17:28 for 135th and senior Todd Russell ran 17:29 in 138th.

The remaining Marauders finished 5th as a team in the open race behind Joe Ryan’s 13th place finish in 11:23. Junior Eric Huitt was 27th in 11:40, senior Ben Flores was 35th in 11:53, freshman Diego Levenfeld was 40th in 11:59 and sophomore Michael Gamette was 45th in 12:02. Sophomore Lukas Crawford (47th, 12:03) and freshman Tomas Penner (52nd, 12:06) rounded out the top 7 finishers for Jesuit.

The squad splits again next Saturday for the Clovis Invitational in Fresno and the Wildfire Invitational in Foresthill. The top runners from the varsity, JV and frosh-soph squads will preview the state meet course at Clovis while the rest of the team faces local competition in Foresthill.
