NOTE: Jesuit is currently following the ‘Distance Learning’  Bell Schedules

All calendared school events and activities, along with the daily bell schedule and student Collaboration information and dates for first quarter only, are now available to view online through the school calendar. Our traditional printed calendar filled with every event is a bit pared down this year however we will still be printing a hard-copy wall calendar and distributed to school families soon.

Please refer frequently to the online calendar on the Jesuit High School website for the most up-to-date information on upcoming events and the daily bell schedule.

UPDATE

Since we first announced our adapted bell schedule in early July, we received the feedback we had hoped for and have made some revisions. The basic premise of the new schedule is the same: an eight-period rotating schedule, with classes meeting three times each week most weeks of the year. Standard schools days are 8:30 a.m. – 3:05 p.m.

Now that students can see their 2020-2021 schedules, they should have at least one Flex period each semester. It is our hope that in distance learning students make good use of their Flex period to unplug and step away from their computers; it would be a great time to get some exercise or take a mental break.

NOTE FOR DISTANCE LEARNING

Distance Learning daily schedule amended to have one lunch period. All classes will still meet in same order and rotation during DL.

PLANNING

To allow for all students to return each day, Jesuit Sacramento has looked carefully at how the school day and class schedules are arranged. By being innovative in the approach, the Academic Committee was able to structure the day to allow for either a safe return to campus for all students every day or a synchronous Distance Learning model.

The schedule for 2020-2021 will now have eight periods instead of seven as used in 2019-20, with a longer “passing period” time in between each class. This addition results in smaller class sizes to allow for physical distancing in all classrooms and safe physical distancing throughout the day. The additional period will automatically require an added flex period; students will not be able to add another class. When a student’s flex period occurs at the start or end of the school day, we will allow a late arrival or early departure from campus to promote even more physical distancing.

The consistent start times for classes, standard class length, and predictable rotation throughout the week will allow for a smooth transition back to on-campus in-person learning.

Flex Periods

Students will still be assigned a flex period. As noted above, the move to an eight-period schedule will mean that students will likely be assigned two flex periods in addition to their six classes. Students will not be able to add another class as we are already maximizing the use of teachers and classroom space. Large supervised areas, including the Harris Center, Fr. Barry Gymnasium and new Welcome Center will be furnished with desks and tables, properly physically distanced, for students to utilize during their flex period. Flex period locations will be assigned by class year. When a student’s flex period occurs at the start or end of the school day, we will allow a late arrival or early departure from campus to promote even more physical distancing.

Attendance

One of our goals at Jesuit High School Sacramento is to develop independent and confident students ready for the rigors of college. High school years are a balance, then, between parental involvement and student accountability and organization. To help keep parents informed while also encouraging student independence, Jesuit teachers use PowerSchool to record daily attendance records as well as all grades.

Parents must establish a PowerSchool account and then sign up to receive attendance notifications. Instructions for establishing an account and signing up for attendance notifications will be mailed to all parents just before classes begin in August.

On-Campus

Teachers will take attendance at the start of every period for both the students present in the room and the students participating remotely. Taking attendance will also serve as additional confirmation that each student has completed the symptom self-check.

Distance Learning

Teachers will take attendance at the start of every period for all students logged into their synchronous Zoom session on time.

Office Hours & Collaboration Periods

Monday – Friday 8:00-8:30 am

As you can see on the schedule, each morning will start with Office Hours or Collaboration from 8:00-8:30. The schedule takes our previous once-a-week collaboration model and spreads that collaboration time across the week to be used more frequently in smaller group settings. Details about how that time will be used are in the works.

We have designed more frequent and shorter opportunities to allow an increased number of smaller gatherings for students and faculty as we try to limit larger groups and meetings. Additionally, the new morning schedule has the added benefit of a later start for students when not needing to attend the morning function. This is consistent with new state recommendations on school start times.

If a student’s year-level is scheduled for a Collaboration Period meeting on a given day, his presence is mandatory and attendance will be taken. If a student will be absent from a required Collaboration Period, all of the school’s normal attendance policies apply.

Students not scheduled for a Collaboration Period meeting on a given day are welcome to do any of the following:

  • Sleep in and arrive in time for the first class period of the day (8:30 a.m.)
  • (If open) use the following areas of campus: Harris Center, King Library, student quads
  • Schedule personal off-campus appointments. Families are strongly encouraged to schedule all appointments (e.g. doctor, dentist, etc.) during open Collaboration Periods.
