Junior Summer Reading
Class of 2021
All Juniors must read regardless of English placement:
Wes Moore - The Other Wes Moore - ISBN 9780385528207
While you read, you may wish to take notes, annotate, or use other active reading strategies. There is no formal assignment due at the beginning of the year, but you will be given an in-class writing assignment during the first full week of classes. This assignment will ask you to call upon your understanding and thinking about what you read, and to make specific references to the text as necessary.
Read Several Short Sentences about Writing by Verlyn Klinkenborg ISBN 978-0307279415
Read, annotate, and outline chapters 1 and 2 of The Language of Composition (Second Edition). (This is the course textbook.) ISBN 978-0312676506
Do one complete “culminating activity” from either of those introductory chapters from Language of Composition. Type your work in MLA format, and be prepared to submit it on the Monday of the first full week of classes.
Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell ISBN 978-0316017930
Campbell Biology 10th Edition Mastering Biology ISBN 978-0321775658. It is recommended that you buy a used hard copy. A new one is very expensive and the online book can be fickle with access.
Read chapter 1 – 3 in Chemistry: The Central Science 12th edition ISBN 9780321696724 OR ISBN 978132175081 by Brown, LeMay, Bursten, and Murphy.
Print out and complete the reading guides and practice problems. Show all of your work on the practice problems.
There are also a series of videos posted on Google Classroom. Join the class with the code: irayxx. Watching the videos and taking notes as you watch is required. I will collect your video notes the first day of class. The videos should be helpful as you complete the reading and practice problems.
The reading guides and practice problems will be collected the first day of school. There will be a test on this material during the first week of school.
