Jesuit High School Sacramento Announces Historic Transition to Co-Divisional Education Model

Press Release

Jesuit High School Sacramento, a cornerstone of Catholic education in the region for over six decades, proudly announces a bold and mission-driven evolution: beginning in Fall 2027, Jesuit Sacramento will welcome its first cohort of young women, becoming the only co-divisional high school in California.

This transformative decision, overwhelmingly approved by the Jesuit High School of Sacramento Board of Trustees, reflects a deep commitment to the school’s founding mission and a visionary response to the changing educational landscape. The new co-divisional model will feature two distinct academic divisions—a Boys Division and a Girls Division—preserving the benefits of single-sex education while offering vibrant, integrated co-curricular experiences.

“Jesuit High School is not a school with a mission. We are a mission with a school,” said Chair-Elect Dr. Amy Rogers. “This expansion allows us to share our mission with an even broader community, forming young men and women for others into leaders of competence, conscience, compassion, and commitment.”

Founded in 1963, Jesuit Sacramento has long been recognized for its academic excellence, spiritual formation, and commitment to service. The co-divisional model builds on this legacy by offering single-sex instruction in the classroom tailored to the developmental needs of boys and girls, while also providing shared co-curricular experiences such as service initiatives, athletics, arts, and leadership programs. Together, these elements foster a campus community rooted in faith, friendship, and purpose—preparing students to thrive in college and beyond.

The decision was guided by extensive discernment and strategic planning, which included an analysis of demographic enrollment trends, consideration of the expressed desires of Catholic families with daughters, and the review of long-term financial sustainability. This discernment took place in dialogue with Fr. Sean Carroll, SJ, the Provincial of the Jesuits West.

Fr. Carroll shared, “I am grateful for the vision and leadership of the Board of Trustees and President of Jesuit High School as they look toward the future.  The mission of Jesuit education continues to thrive in Sacramento, and we look forward to welcoming young women into this grace-filled tradition at Jesuit High.”

Throughout the process, the Board of Trustees, comprised of alumni, current parents, and community leaders, acted with clarity and conviction to ensure the school’s mission remains strong and accessible for generations to come.

Founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola nearly five centuries ago, the Jesuits and Ignatian education across the globe have consistently dared to imagine what’s possible. This bold spirit of innovation lives on in every classroom, every program, and every student who walks the halls of Jesuit Sacramento.

“The transition to a co-divisional model is not a departure from tradition, but a continuation of the type of thinking which has allowed Jesuit education to thrive for 500 years. Innovation propels Jesuit forward, allowing us to form fearless leaders, steeped in tradition but unafraid to chart a new course,” shared Board Chair Kelly Brothers ’82.

Rooted in Ignatian values and inspired by the magis, Jesuit Sacramento is preparing a new generation of leaders formed in faith, committed to justice, and ready to set the world on fire.
