This feast day celebrates the miraculous appearance of Mary to St. Juan Diego in 1531 just outside Mexico City. Tradition holds that Mary spoke to Juan, a member of the Chichimeca people in modern day Mexico, in his native language and asked him to implore the local bishop to build a chapel in the place where she appeared. To help Juan convince the local bishop, Our Lady of Guadalupe instructed Juan to gather roses from the hill where the chapel was to be built. This was miraculous because roses were not in season at the time. She also miraculously imprinted Juan’s cloak with her now famous image. Our Lady of Guadalupe’s message of comfort and the significance of her message of God’s solidarity with those who were marginalized in Latin America has immense cultural and religious significance for Catholics in the Americas. For this reason, Our Lady of Guadalupe has been designated by the Church as the Patroness of the Americas. Jesuit High School will be celebrating her feast day in December with an all-school Mass in the Barry Gym beginning at 10:45 am.

Families are welcome to attend our school-wide Mass in the gym

We will be celebrating the Farewell Mass as a school community in the Barry Gym. This Mass is an opportunity for our campus community to gather together to give thanks for the blessings of the past school year and pray for each grade level as they look toward the year to come. We will especially pray for our senior class as we say goodbye and they look toward graduation and life beyond Jesuit High School.  A special ritual at this Mass is the Passing of Colors Ceremony. This involves each class receiving their next class color ribbon. The ribbon will be wrapped around the class candle that accompanies each class on retreats and at class Masses throughout their four year Jesuit journey. Senior class representatives will lead this ritual, which symbolically represents how they entrust each up and coming class to care for our community and hold tight to our traditions. Parents and family members of current students as well as alumni are invited to attend.

Our Recognized Artists demonstrate the magis by using their gifts out of gratitude for God’s creation and in service to the Jesuit High School community.

About the Thanksgiving Interfaith Prayer Service

On Friday, November 21, the day before we leave for Thanksgiving Break, we will gather as a community to pause and give thanks for God’s many blessings; including the blessing of our wonderfully diverse world of language, culture, and ways we honor God in our various faith traditions. In the spirit of the Jesuit tradition of “finding God in all things,” we will celebrate the richness of that diversity, understanding it as a blessing rather than a barrier; as Pope Francis himself has charged us “to create a culture of encounter, which encourages individuals and groups to share the richness of their traditions and experiences, to break down walls and to build bridges.” Parents, families, and alumni are welcome to gather and give thanks through prayer with the student body beginning at 10:45 am in the Barry Gym. Please note: while this is not a Mass, students should be in formal dress attire.
