This one-year course is designed to develop a student’s ability to recognize, understand, and describe the basic materials and processes of music that are heard or presented in a score, particularly when it is performed within the context of the Liturgy. The course will seek to instill mastery of the rudiments and terminology of music, including chant and Western notation; intervals; scales and keys; chords; metric organization and rhythmic patterns.

Students will experience a wide variety of music, including not only music from standard Western tonal repertoire, but also contemporary, jazz, gospel and popular music, and the music of non-Western cultures. Students will be expected to learn, rehearse and perform the music for each school liturgy as a choral ensemble, as well as serve as leaders of song (cantors) when needed.
