Emmett Gustorf ’26: leading with understanding

As the Executive Council president, Emmett may be the most well-known person in the senior class. What’s less well-known, however, is the kind of man Emmett is. Our president is empathetic and dependable, always seeks to do the right thing, whether as a friend or as a leader.

“Emmett is someone who always shows up when you need him and he will be one of the first to volunteer even when the job isn’t necessarily fun or glamorous,” said Student Activities Director Mr. Peter Ferrari. “Talk can be cheap, and Emmett isn’t somebody who just talks the talk but he shows up.”

A hallmark of Emmett’s leadership style is an emphasis on empathy, which he feels he’s developed during his time at Jesuit.

“Sometimes I’ll be working in student council and maybe one of the other members doesn’t get his work done, or maybe he’s struggling with something, and at first it can be kind of annoying; he didn’t do what he was supposed to do or whatever,” Emmett said. “But I don’t know what he’s dealing with and maybe he was struggling with something and he just needed a little help.”

Executive Council Vice President Luca McGlynn ’26 has been friends with Emmett for over a decade, having met in the first grade. He attests to Emmett’s easy-going, caring nature.

“He’s just really easy to talk to, really easy to get along with,” Luca said. “He’s someone that I can just be around any time of the day no matter how I’m feeling and I’ll feel comfortable. He’s just a comfortable guy to be around and has a good heart.”

Luca has worked with Emmett on many occasions, ranging from Executive Council to cooperatively leading Model UN Club and the Music Club. He believes that Emmett inspires those who work with him through leading by example.

“[Emmett’s] the type of guy that will work hard; he’ll do the dirty work,” Luca said. “He’ll do the stuff that most people don’t want to do, like going to the food drive [trailer] every day or writing up all those emails – doing all the hard work you wouldn’t really think the president would be doing. I think that really inspires the people under him or the people around him to work hard in that way too.”

Mr. Ferrari believes that Emmett has gone above and beyond to make Jesuit a better school.

“Emmett doesn’t have a lot of excuses; he just shows up, does what he’s asked and often more than he’s asked,” Mr. Ferrari said. “He just cares a lot about this place about making it a good place that people want to be and people enjoy themselves at.”
