Jesuit baseball looking strong as playoffs approach

Jesuit High School Sacramento’s varsity baseball team is going strong in their 2025 spring season, with a record of 18-9.

With key wins over tough opponents like Bellarmine College Preparatory and St. Mary’s High School, the team has shown its immense talent on the field. Varsity Baseball Head Coach Joe Potulny is most impressed by the team’s bond.

“The most pleasant development has been the positive team culture the players have brought to the clubhouse thus far,” Coach Potulny said. “The underclassmen feel accepted by the returning athletes. This team is experiencing the best team chemistry since the 2020 season.”

The chemistry between players, in combination with strong pitching and defensive play, has allowed Jesuit to thrive against tough opponents.

“Pitching and defence have been the bulwarks that have enabled this group to begin the season in impressive fashion against several top tier programs in Northern California,” Coach Potulny added.

The team’s success is the result of contributions from many players across the team.

“Owen Page has been an anchor on the mound,” Coach Potulny said. “Alex Quigley ’26 and Teddy Rios ’26 have contributed significantly from the bullpen. Eric Erdmann ’25 is picking from where he left off last spring as one of the premiere 2-way players in the area. Sammy Kane ’26 has exploded the past two weeks offensively, tying a state record with four doubles in a single game while dominating the late innings as the closer.”

Still, the team has had its obstacles, especially on the offensive side. Jesuit experienced tough losses in games against Davis High School and Rocklin High School, showing the team still has more room to grow and improve on the fundamentals.

“The team is scuffling offensively as they work through the most challenging part of their season,” Coach Potulny said. “They will need to embrace the difficulties associated with improving their mechanics and/or approach. It’s easy to take a short cut and continue with the same process, but that generally yields mediocre results.”

Austin Norquist ’25 believes that the team needs to stay focused going forward.

“One of the biggest challenges has been maintaining momentum,” Austin said. “Our recent losses to Davis and Rocklin were a reminder that every game demands full focus.”

After fumbling games against Rocklin and Davis, the team came back swinging by winning three out of four games at the All Faiths Tournament in Las Vegas. On top of that, Jesuit baseball successfully secured a playoff berth with two victories over Granite Bay.

Coach Potulny has a clear goal for the rest of the season: figure everything out in preparation for playoffs.

“The goal is always to get to the postseason,” Coach Potulny said. “Coach Kelly and the recent performance of the basketball team following the section final are a first-hand example of what is possible when everyone is on the same page pulling in the same direction [...] Right now is a crucial time for this team. The position players will need to trust what the coaches are asking them to do offensively and buy in without hesitation.”

With strong pitching, solid defense, and an unbreakable team bond, the baseball team looks forward to making serious headway and fighting to a successful postseason.
