Jesuit lacrosse: dedicated, tight, and proficient

Emphasizing character and community, the Jesuit High School Sacramento Varsity Lacrosse team has worked its way to an overall record of 8-5 and a league record of 5-1.

Jesuit has 158 goals on the season while allowing 133. So far, Jesuit has won games through a strong balance of offense and defense, which has come up big in close games like the one against Rocklin High School, where Jesuit won 19-15.

“Our best win this season so far has been against Rocklin,” said attacker Kai Switlick ’25. “Our offense was able to easily get past our defenders, and our defense did a great job holding their offense back for most of the game. Midfielder Colin Lee ’26 had a great game with nine goals and three assists.”

The lacrosse team’s success wouldn’t be possible without putting in hard work and thoroughly preparing. Colin is no stranger to this team’s dedication to their sport.

“Throughout this season, I think that the team has [been working hard],” Colin said. “Every day after our two-hour practice, there are multiple people who stay after to try to get better. People also try to organize their own time on the weekends to play together. Everyone wants to get better for themselves and for the team.”

Constantly working hard for months can be taxing, however, so it’s important to have a strong community that supports each other. Luckily, the lacrosse team has this in veteran Payton Coss ’24, who has found fulfillment in the relationships he’s built in his three years on the varsity lacrosse team.

“Playing Jesuit Lacrosse has been fun and I’ve enjoyed being able to meet and talk to a lot of new people I wouldn’t normally talk to,” Payton said. “The team this year has had good chemistry and we have done well holding each other accountable.”

The Jesuit lacrosse community is rooted in a code that the team leaders try to instill in every player as soon as the season starts. Kai has taken it upon himself to pass on to his teammates the lessons he’s learned while playing lacrosse.

“As a captain, one of my biggest goals is to make the team better, which I try to accomplish by teaching players anything I can about the game,” Kai said. “Our team has five pillars which form the acronym ‘GRAFT’: Gratitude, Relentless, Attitude, Fortitude, and Trust. Our team goal is to become players who compete in every game and demonstrate these qualities.”

With the postseason rapidly approaching, it’s crunch time for the Marauders. They have a goal of finishing the regular season strong and carrying over that momentum into the postseason. Based on how they’ve been performing so far, the lacrosse team has a good chance of accomplishing that.

“A few team goals are to win our league, and also win city playoffs,” Colin said. “We came second in the league last year, and third in the city. I think that this is the year we can win both. We are already undefeated in league games and I feel like we could go undefeated all year. I also feel like we are the best team in Sacramento, so we could definitely win city playoffs.”

Dedicated, tight, and proficient. These are the words that describe Jesuit’s lacrosse team, which has a good shot at winning league as well as city playoffs this year. With two games left in the regular season, be sure to show up and support them. Their next game is on Wednesday, April 24 against Vista Del Lago High School.
