Jesuit High School Sacramento had a hugely successful 2023 swim and dive season, winning the league title, the section title, and finished 10th in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) State Swimming and Diving Championships. This year, the team aims to build upon that success and dominate in Jesuit’s final year in the Delta League.

Many of Jesuit’s top performers from last year’s Delta League Championships are returning this year. Head Coach Michael Solander ’92 is confident that the team’s bonds and experience will lead to a successful season.

“We have a great swim season lined up and I look forward to working with our coaches, Heath Charamuga ’88, Ray Wieser, and Chris Nissen [who have] coached with us and water polo for over 10 years,” Coach Solander said. “We work well together and have built trust, dependability, and creativity over the years. We have a lot of returning swimmers that make the season fun and can’t wait to get back on the deck in February.”

Many of the team’s swimmers have been hard at work over the off-season, preparing themselves to meet their goals.

“I’ve been doing competitive swim to prepare and improve before the school season starts,” said Campbell Fulton ’26. “My main goal for this upcoming swim is to get a 56 second 100-yard backstroke and to overall get stronger and improve in all strokes.”

It’s not just the swimmers who have been hard at work, the coaches too have been preparing. In fact, the coaching staff has already planned out training for the entire season.

“We have met as a coaching staff and have a season plan developed in three phases leading up to the Delta League Championship in late April and the CIF section championship meet in May,” Coach Solander said. “The season is broken into thirds with aerobic and anaerobic training guiding the workouts with all intention for swimmers to produce at leagues and CIF championships.”

Even though section finals aren’t until early May, the swim team is determined to win their 25th section championship. One of the team’s top swimmers, Brady Calkins ’25, hopes that he can deliver when the time comes.

“I want to win another section title, that’s always the goal,” Brady said. “For myself individually, I would love to win both of my events this year at sections. I think I’ve set myself up pretty well to be in a good situation to do that. I know that I need to get points on the board for my team and points are really all that matters when it comes to high school swimming.”

While swimming is mostly an individual sport, Brady believes that community will be an important part of the team’s success. He is confident that the brotherhood will be in full effect throughout the season.

“Something we do with the Jesuit brotherhood and something that is in our culture is coming together and fighting for one common goal,” Brady said. “[We’ll be] together as a team and really willing to make sacrifices to set us up as best possible to achieve those goals.”
