With the commencement of winter sports at Jesuit comes the beginning of the wrestling season. Jesuit High School Sacramento’s varsity wrestling team hopes to carry on the momentum of last season, as upperclassmen adapt to their new leadership roles and freshmen find their places within the team.

The team is a blend of experienced varsity veterans and eager underclassmen, all driven to represent the school and the wrestling program to the best of their abilities. They have high hopes this season as they aim to further improve after memorable careers from now-graduated seniors Max Troppman ’25 and Logan Nguyen ’25.

“As a team, our goal is simply to have a great season,” said Hunter Greenfield ’28. “One where we grow, stay committed, and push each other to improve every day.”

One of the leading figures on this year’s wrestling team is Junior Lorenzo ‘Lolo’ Mabalot ’27. Despite his season-ending injury last year, Lolo tallied 23 wins and had podium performances at notable events, such as the Mark Fuller and Christian Cotter tournaments, showing that he will be a name to look out for as he returns to the mat this season.

“My goal personally is to move up the state rankings and make a run to Masters,” Lorenzo said.

Despite wrestling appearing to be an individual sport, many of the Marauders say that the team aspect plays a critical role by creating a sense of shared accountability.

“I expect everyone on the team to show up ready to compete,” Lorenzo said. “Win or lose, I expect them to walk off the mat knowing they left everything out there.”

The Jesuit varsity team has had an unfortunate start to its season, with defeats against Rocklin, Whitney, and Del Oro. However, they look to bounce back in their next match, the Arsen Battle Memorial at River City High School, on Saturday, Dec. 20th.
