Marauders fall to the wolves in season-opening loss
On Friday, Aug. 22, Jesuit High School Sacramento’s varsity football team was defeated by the Woodcreek High School Timberwolves 38-13.
Jesuit received the opening kickoff and moved the ball into Woodcreek territory thanks to a 63-yard run by Jeremiah Brannon ’27. However, a fumble on the next snap was snatched up by the Woodcreek defense and returned for a touchdown. After a successful PAT (Point After Touchdown), Jesuit was down 7-0.
Jesuit’s next drive ended in an interception, giving the Timberwolves possession at midfield. On the next play, Woodcreek extended their lead with a 51-yard rushing touchdown. After the extra point, it was 14-0 Woodcreek.
The next Marauder drive resulted in yet another interception. A pass by quarterback Teddy Rios ’26 was tipped up and picked off by Woodcreek. After the turnover, the Timberwolves ran 40 yards for their third touchdown in under five minutes.
Jesuit’s lack of ball security continued with a fumble that was recovered by the Woodcreek defense, giving them possession on Jesuit’s 25-yard line. The Marauders were able to hold Woodcreek to a field goal attempt. After the kick, Jesuit was down 24-0.
Midway through the second quarter, the Marauders got on the score board. Teddy Rios connected with wide receiver Rocco Lucchetti ’26 for a 20-yard touchdown, making the score 24-7 Woodcreek.
The Marauder offense, however, continued to turn the ball over. Late in the second quarter, another fumble led to a 2-yard rushing touchdown for the Timberwolves, seconds before halftime. Jesuit entered the break, down 31-7.
The second half was much less dramatic, going scoreless until Woodcreek punched in a 6-yard rushing touchdown with five minutes left in the game, extending their lead to 38-7.
Jesuit scored in the final seconds of the game when running back Kwanna Smith ’28 scored a 9-yard rushing touchdown. Jesuit failed to convert the two-point conversion, making the final score 38-13.
