Opinion: Theology offers the best answers

When considering the most valuable subjects in school, people often default to mathematics, literature, and science. Each of these subjects have concrete, real-world applications that are commonly found on many career paths. I believe, however, that the most important subject is theology. Beyond spiritual fulfillment, theology delves into life’s greatest questions and shapes our morality.

One of the most compelling reasons that theology is the most important subject is its broad scope. Science explores how the world works, literature explores the experiences of the world, and math puts values behind it all. However, theology attempts to answer the why questions. Why are we here? What is our purpose in life?

Additionally, theology encourages us to think critically. Many people assume that the acceptance of faith is a blind task – something that you have to do without critical examination. A true study of theology, though, demands careful historical analysis of texts, along with context and reasoning. Theological debates are usually fruitful and fulfilling. In these debates, the exploration of evil and good, fate vs. freewill, and the concept of faith require us to weigh evidence and debate in a thoughtful manner, with many different interpretations of the evidence.

Beyond intellectual benefits, theology builds and shapes a person’s character better than any other subject can. Math can teach problem solving, and history can chronicle the past, but theology calls every individual to live a virtuous life, regardless of how well you can solve calculus problems. The study of scripture and the teachings of Jesus helps all of us foster humility, compassion, and integrity. Theology challenges students to not just know more, but to actively be better, and to work towards the image of Christ.

Finally, theology provides a foundation for a very diverse and changing world. As cultural trends shift and society advances, the teachings of Christ offer a baseline for what someone can always rely on during difficult situations. Theology gives hope and clarity in times of darkness, and a sense of comfort to those in need.

Theology transcends academics by answering some of life’s deepest, most notoriously difficult questions, shaping character and offering an enduring truth in a changing world. It challenges us to think critically, live virtuously, and find purpose beyond just mere knowledge. Therefore, I believe that theology is the most vital subject.
