On Sept. 9, 2023, Jesuit High School Sacramento’s football team defeated Christian Brothers High School 41-8 in the 52nd Holy Bowl.

Jesuit started the game by forcing CB to punt on their first possession. Jesuit then followed up with a quick offensive push, ending in a 65-yard touchdown pass from quarterback CJ Lee ’24 to wide-receiver Caleb Dixon ’24 less than four minutes into the game.

Jesuit halted CB’s next offensive push, forcing a punt that was then blocked by wide-receiver Zach Lowery ’24.

On the next play, CJ ran 44-yards to the end zone, scoring Jesuit’s second touchdown of the game.

After forcing CB to punt for a third time, Jesuit drove the field to score another touchdown on a 7-yard run by running-back Drew Vassar ’24. At the end of the first quarter, Jesuit led 21-0.

CB started the second quarter completing a series of passes that drove them to within 1-yard of the endzone. Jesuit’s defense stayed strong, however, and stopped CB from reaching the end zone on a fourth down attempt.

The two teams went back and forth for the rest of the quarter until Drew managed to find a hole in CB’s defense and ran for a 32-yard score for his second touchdown of the game. The score at the half was 27-0.

Jesuit received the kickoff to start the second half, and Caleb ran the length of the field to the end zone for a 99-yard kick return touchdown.

Jesuit then stopped CB’s offense again, and regained possession of the ball. This possession ended in a 32-yard touchdown run by running-back Johnnie Brannon IV ’24. After converting the extra point, Jesuit led 41-0.

The fourth quarter witnessed neither team being able to generate any momentum until CB scored on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Shawn Underwood to Adrian Davis. CB was successful on their two point conversion.

Both teams went back to trading possessions until cornerback Max Diepenbrock ’24 intercepted a CB pass to close out the game.

The final score of the 52nd Holy Bowl was 41-8. CJ finished the game with 173 passing yards, 109 rushing yards, and one rushing touchdown, and Drew and Caleb had two touchdowns. Next week, Jesuit travels to face the Sheldon High School Huskies on Friday, Sept.15, at 7:15 p.m.
