Choral Program earns “Superior” at Golden Empire Music Festival
The arts are alive and thriving at Jesuit High School Sacramento, where students discover their voices—sometimes for the first time—and answer the call to grow as “Men for Others” through creativity.
Congratulations to the talented students of the Jesuit Choral Program for earning the highest rating of “Superior” at the Golden Empire Music Festival at California State University, Sacramento, on March 29, 2025.
This marks the first time since 2012 that Jesuit’s choir has achieved this honor, and the first time in school history that the entire choral program, from freshmen to seniors, has been recognized at this level. Many of these students had never sung before high school, proving that dedication and passion can create something truly extraordinary. Bravo, Marauders!
The California Music Educators Association coordinates the adjudicated festival, and each choir performs multiple pieces for three professional judges. They are scored (out of 100) and rated (Superior, Excellent, Fair, Needs Improvement) based on sound quality, technical accuracy, musicality, and stage presence.
“I am tremendously proud of the growth that our program has experienced in my first two years at Jesuit, and earning a ‘Superior’ rating is something that has not been done [for over a decade.] shared Director of Choral Music David Vanderbout. “None of this could happen without our tremendous students and their dedication to choral music.”
Rooted in Jesuit values, participation in the performing arts nurtures the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—enhancing academic achievement, social-emotional development, and overall well-being. It fosters empathy, builds community, and forms students who think critically, lead with compassion, and contribute meaningfully to the world around them. The choir’s achievement is a testament to the transformative power of the arts and the unwavering dedication of our students, faculty, and supporters.
Bravo, Jesuit Choir!
