Campus Ministry starts a new chapter

Since Jesuit High School’s beginning, Campus Ministry has been guiding students along their spiritual journey on and beyond campus. This year, Campus Ministry hopes to maintain their welcoming spirit with the addition of new faces and a new look.

With the new school year, Campus Ministry welcomes new teacher and campus minister, Ms. Alice Klarsfeld. Ms. Klarsfeld comes to Jesuit after teaching at a Filipino Jesuit school for more than 10 years, and now she brings her experience to Campus Ministry as the new AAssociate Director. One of the core principles of Jesuit schools in the Philippines is their emphasis on the philosophy of magis.

“The Jesuit schools in the Philippines are really big on Magis,” Ms. Klarsfeld said. “Magis is excellence, being more, doing more. [...]
More in terms of helping others, more in terms of your studies. You don’t settle for the mediocre. [Magis] is about doing the best that you can with what you have. It’s all rooted in the principle and foundation of St. Ignatius, do anything that will help for the Greater Glory of God.”

Mr. Adam McGrew ’15 is also experiencing a change, moving from the position as Associate Director to Director of Campus Ministry. He plans to continue the growth of the theological core of Jesuit, and is hoping to discover how to best meet the needs of the constantly evolving Jesuit student body.

“I want to have a really a comprehensive look at how our office ministers to students, through the programming that exists at the present moment, but also how we interact and collaborate with other adults and departments on campus, and see if there’s ways where we can collaborate further on projects, that at the end of the day, are going to ultimately benefit all the students in Jesuit High School,” Mr. McGrew said.

Mr. McGrew also hopes to expand the spiritual pathways that students can explore.

“One thing I’m looking at as potentially adding in would be an outdoor wilderness retreat,” Mr. McGrew said. “So it would be more of a camping or a backpacking type setting or format, but the focus being on ‘where do we encounter God in creation?’”

Campus Ministry will continue to grow, adapt, and change, but it will always keep its welcoming and communal nature that has been loved by students since Jesuit first opened.
