Creative Writing Club offers an outlet for imagination

At Jesuit High School Sacramento, the Creative Writing Club offers students a place to develop their writing and share ideas with other students who enjoy storytelling and poetry.

The club was founded to give writers a shared space to create and collaborate. The club’s goal is to help students stay motivated in their creative pursuits in a busy academic environment.

“Often, I’ve noticed, in myself especially, that in the [tedium] of school and life, people can get tired and unmotivated to work on creative pursuits without the presence of a community,” said Club Founder Lucas Darling ’26. “This club exists to provide that community for writers or people interested in creative writing.”

The club often writes from prompts chosen together as a group. Members spend several meetings developing their pieces, experimenting with ideas, and refining their writing.

“Communally, we decide on a prompt and spend the next few meetings writing on it,” Lucas said. “One of our more lucrative prompts this year was ‘alchemy’ during October. You may have seen two pieces written on the topic in the most recent edition of Moorings.”

Unlike many writing environments, the Creative Writing Club removes the pressure of grades and assignments. Instead, students write purely for the sake of creativity and freedom.

“I enjoy having different prompts with other people without the pressure of having it be a grade in a class,” said Jeremiah Choi ’28, a member of the club. “It makes it feel less serious and gives me a devoted time to write I would not otherwise have.”

Jeremiah first joined the club after discovering it at Club Day during his freshman year. What began as a casual interest has quickly turned into an experience he found enjoyable and motivating.

“My experience with it has been very positive,” Jeremiah said. “It is a very fun experience to be able to write with other people with a shared prompt and be able to share our ideas.”

The club has also helped him grow as a writer while building connections with other members.

“The club has helped me to want to work on my writing more and take stories to different places,” Jeremiah said. “I also enjoy the camaraderie with the rest of the club members and getting to know them better instead of simply writing alone.”

The Creative Writing Club is open to students of all experience levels. By combining creativity with community, the club provides a place where students can share in the art of writing together.
