Since 1969, the Holy Bowl has been more than just a football game. It is one of the largest sporting events of the year, and fans from high schools across the region come to Sacramento City College to witness the well-known rivalry between Jesuit High School Sacramento and Christian Brothers High School.

This year, Jesuit High School bested the Christian Brothers Falcons 28-7.

The two teams came into the matchup with two very different openings to their seasons. Jesuit suffered a loss against Woodcreek 38-13, but has since put on two dominant displays against Rio Americano, winning 35-0, and Bellarmine College Prep, winning 42-7. On the other hand, Christian Brothers came into the game 0-3, most recently suffering a 52-20 loss at home to Nevada Union.

Defense dictated the first quarter. The quarter almost went scoreless, however, an interception in the end zone by defensive back Colton Dewar ’28 gave quarterback Teddy Rios ’26 and the Jesuit offense the opportunity to drive the length of the field, capped off by a 1-yard touchdown run by running back Brody Quinn ’27.

The second quarter also had little action. Jesuit’s defense held CB to three consecutive scoreless drives, but CB came back and got their own end zone interception. Yet again, as the clock closed in on the two-minute warning, Jesuit’s offense sparked into action and drove down the field. Running back Kwanna Smith ’28 added to Jesuit’s lead with a 15-yard touchdown run with 2:39 left in the 2nd quarter, to give Jesuit a 14-0 lead.

Jesuit ended the second quarter by putting together another touchdown drive, finished by a 12-yard pass by Teddy to receiver Alex Dewar ’26.

The Marauders concluded the half with a solid 21-0 lead. Teddy had 140 passing yards, Alex and Colton had a touchdown and an interception respectively, and Kwanna had a rushing average of 11.2 yards per attempt, with a touchdown. Additionally, the defense kept CB scoreless.

Christian Brothers controlled the ball in the third quarter thanks to two onside kick recoveries by the Falcons’ special teams. CB had three possessions to Jesuit’s one in the third quarter. With their last possession of the quarter, the Falcons completed a 6-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead down to 21-7 with 1:04 remaining in the third quarter.

CB’s defense began the final quarter well, forcing Jesuit to a fourth down at their own four-yard line. However, Jesuit’s offense bounced back on the next drive as Teddy completed another 18-yard touchdown pass to receiver Stevie Hughes ’26 to make the score 28-7 with 5:48 left on the clock, which would end up being the final score.

The Marauder defense once again demonstrated their dominance, allowing only 14 points in the three games since the loss to Woodcreek.

Defensive lineman Demare Moragne ’26 credits the win to teamwork, emphasising the importance of how each player relies on each other to come together as one unit.

“I can’t do my role without my other three D-linemen and my whole defense to be honest,” Demare said. “We all have to come together and play together … Just being out here with all my guys and just winning this is just the greatest feeling you could have.”

Jesuit is now 3-1 on the season. Demare feels that this outcome could be the motivation for many great wins to come.

“I think this pushes us forward a lot,” Demare said. “We had a tough loss week one, but we just have to keep the streak. We got three [wins] right now, [and if we] keep the streak going into the league, I think we could really do something out here.”

Jesuit looks to have a bright future thanks to many contributions from juniors and sophomores. Brody and Kwanna combined for 123 yards over 13 carries, defensive linemen Elias Cherry ’28 and Lolo Mabalot ’27 both sacked the Falcons’ QB, and Colton recorded an end zone interception. This year’s win marks the fifth consecutive time the Marauders have taken the Holy Bowl, having only lost three times in the past 30 years.

Jesuit looks to extend their winning streak this week when they play at Granite Bay on Friday; kickoff is at 7PM.
