Jewish Student Union scores a win for the record books
From Monday, March 31 to Friday, April 11, the big event on Jesuit High School Sacramento’s campus was the World Cup. With five different teams each competing under the flag of their representative countries, the atmosphere was extremely exciting.
In the first game on Wednesday, April 2, the Asian Pacific Islanders Club (APIC) came out with a 4-2 victory over the Jewish Student Union (JSU). After that game, Latinos Unidos played the French Club. At halftime, the French Club was up 6 points, but Latinos Unidos caught up by the end of the game, making the final score 6-6.
On Thursday, April 3, APIC and the Black Student Union (BSU) kicked off the first game of the day. The final score ended up 2-1, in favor of APIC. The following match was played by the JSU and Latinos Unidos, where the JSU came out on top 3-0.
Friday, April 4, started off with the French Club and the BSU playing against each other, with the French Club winning 2-1. Following that, the first semi-final game took place between APIC and Latinos Unidos. APIC won this game with a result of 2-1.
On Monday, April 7, the second semi-final game took place. This game was played between the French Club and the JSU, and resulted in a 2-1 JSU win.
Finally, the championship game was the longest of them all. JSU played APIC, which resulted in an extremely tense game between the two teams. However, in double overtime, JSU player Maximo Palone ’27 connected with Jackson Stovall ’27, giving the JSU a 1-0 victory.
The President of the JSU, Henry Sperber ’27, was overjoyed by this incredible win. He believes that JSU will now be given the recognition they deserve among other clubs.
“The win for the JSU brings the club into a category of the more recognized clubs at Jesuit, like APIC and Latinos Unidos,” Henry said. “It bonded everyone on the team and in the club because it allowed them to root for a common goal. This will not be the last World Cup [where everyone] will see the brilliance of the JSU.”
