Key Club: serving the community while having fun

Jesuit High School Sacramento is home to many clubs that cater to each student’s interests and passions. Moderated by Ms. Laura Spelman, Key Club is a service club that is part of a greater national organization called the Kiwanis Club. It focuses on raising awareness and money for those in need.

The Kiwanis Club and its title have a rich history, rooted in service.

“The Kiwanis Club was founded in 1915 in Detroit,” Ms. Spelman said. “It was to form a group of people where everyone was accepted to show this neighborly spirit. [The name] is derived from a Native American word meaning ‘We Trade’ and then the motto changed to ‘We Build.’”

President of Key Club, Charles Kim ’25 believes that the club is an outlet to have fun while serving, and he hopes to continue expanding the club’s service opportunities.

“We want to get people to do service and have fun while doing it,” Charles said. “We’re trying to do more fundraising and more service events in collaboration with Saint Francis High School.”

While the Key Club’s overall goal is to assist those in need, the club is honing in on helping those afflicted by the Los Angeles fires this year.

“I’ve definitely learned the importance of service,” said Key Club Member Declan Cooley ’26. “Of course there is some of that with the Jesuit experience, but seeing the impact of your service over time is great. One goal of the Key Club this year is to raise money to help people, especially those who have been affected by the Los Angeles fires.”

The club is open to anyone interested in joining, especially for students interested in being “Men for Others”.

“I first joined the club at the beginning of last year,” Kai said. “I had heard of it and seen some of the things that they did through one of my upperclassmen friends. It seemed like a good opportunity to help others and just a cool place to hang out. It’s just a great organization. People should come join.”

The Google Classroom code is “ka4sapi.” Information on meeting times and locations is posted there. The Key Club is always accepting of new members willing to give back to their community.
