Mr. Carlos Brusel, a Spanish teacher loved by all his students and co-workers, has announced that the 2022-2023 school year will be his last year teaching at Jesuit High School Sacramento. While he will no longer be physically on campus, Mr. Brusel’s spirit and lasting impact on this school will forever have a special place at Jesuit.

During his 25 years at Jesuit, Mr. Brusel has taught every level of Spanish with a concentration on Spanish 4 AP for seven years and Spanish 3 Honors for 18 years. Mr. Brusel reveals what he will miss most once he leaves Jesuit after such a long time.

“[I will miss] my relationship with all of my students,” Mr. Brusel said. “Also, just every day in class, because for me, being surrounded by young people who have expectations and wishes to succeed makes me feel younger.”

Fellow Spanish teacher Ms. Sarah Kelso has been working alongside Mr. Brusel as a colleague and a friend at Jesuit for 14 years. In that time, she has been able to see Mr. Brusel’s character shine through his passionate teaching.

“I have seen Mr. Brusel succeed in the classroom through his humor, honesty, care for social justice issues and love for this school,” Ms. Kelso said. “I once sat in on Mr. Brusel’s 3H class to see him in action, and at the end of the class, all of his students’ applauded. There is something special about a teacher who can get his students to clap at the end of class! He delivers not only a lesson plan, but a memorable experience for our young men.”

We will miss Mr. Brusel once he is retired. However, in times of sadness, it’s important to cherish good memories we’ve had with Mr. Brusel. For Ms. Kelso, those are the countless times he has brightened her day.

“[Mr. Brusel] is one of a kind,” Ms. Kelso said. “There is no one like him. He has an ability to make me laugh, and I imagine he does the same for his students. In a rigorous, fast-paced school environment, finding time to laugh is very healing, and I’m grateful to have a friend who has made me laugh at work over the years.”

While he is leaving Jesuit, Mr. Brusel will continue to represent the school’s values and be a “Man for Others” while serving his community. He shares his exciting retirement plans for the future.

“I will work as a volunteer for the Shriners hospital,” Mr. Brusel said. “Maybe I will teach private classes, and I would love to spend time between Sacramento, my apartment in Barcelona, and my house in Ireland.”

Mr. Brusel has had a wonderful time feeling at home in the Jesuit community, and he will cherish all that the school has done for him as he moves on.

“I have been very grateful for this school, and these 25 years have not only been professionally very good for me, but also the human side. I have experienced wonderful friendships and lasting memories.”

Mr. Brusel is a passionate and caring teacher, friend, and “Man for Others” whose mark on Jesuit is one that will never be forgotten.
