Opinion: Wicked for Good doesn’t live up to its predecessor

Wicked for Good came out in theaters on Nov. 21, 2025, and was one of the year’s most-talked-about movies, especially since so many fans were excited to see the famous story come to life again after such a promising first installment.

With a strong cast and impressive special effects, the world of Oz was full of color and looked magical on screen. However, the graphics couldn’t carry the movie.

One of the biggest problems is the pacing. Some scenes move too slowly, while others feel rushed, making it hard to stay fully interested and invested. The characters also didn’t get as much development. Compared to the first movie, where characters had complexity, the second movie flattened the characters, robbing them of the depth  that the first movie offered.

Even though the actors did a decent job, their emotions didn’t feel believable at times. For example, the tin man (or Boq before being turned) had extreme emotions towards Glinda (the good witch of Oz) despite her saving his life.

Another thing wrong with emotions was the dark twist the movie took at times. Although the show has its roots in ‘feel-good’ emotions, the show became dark at times for seemingly no reason. For example, the transformation and death of the wicked witch of the east and the fate of animals; the show’s dark concepts didn’t match the rest of the franchise.

The music notes were fine – certainly one of its strong points – but its foundations were still stumped by the first movie. The music had incredible vocals, but didn’t have the emotional impact and powerful, memorable experience that Wicked gave. Wicked for Good ended up being mediocre and disappointing.

The Wicked franchise boasts a visual, musical masterpiece that elevates the movie on top of a high pedestal. However, Wicked for Good’s visuals can only carry it so far. Overall, the movie isn’t bad, but it just isn’t great either. Fans of the original story might enjoy some parts of the story, like songs that bring back parts from the old story, but the film could have been way better; it was not nearly as good as the first.
