The resurgence of Jesuit’s Debate team
During the 2023-24 school year, Jesuit High School Sacramento restarted its Debate Club after a long absence following COVID-19. In the three years since, the team has made a strong return.
At their State Qualifier Tournament this year, the Debate Club won the Small School Sweepstakes. On April 17-19, Seth Eriki ’26, Bobby Price V ’26, and Nick Baltazar ’29 will be competing at the States competition, and later in the month, Nick and Connor Frings ’29 will be going to the National Qualifier tournament.
The emergence of AI at Jesuit
Artificial Intelligence is everywhere in the modern world: in self-driving cars, with images and videos on social media, and educational technology in and out of the classroom.
Students using AI to do their work without the teacher’s endorsement are considered to be committing an academic integrity violation, along the same line as plagiarism. Yet, many students at Jesuit High School Sacramento are still using AI to do their work for them.
Brandon Williams ’26: model of leadership
He’s the leader of the basketball program, he’s a state championship point guard of Jesuit basketball, he’s all we could ask for,” said Head Varsity Basketball Coach Tim Kelly.
Brandon Williams ’26 is the starting point guard and team captain for the Jesuit basketball team. He has led the team, not only as a great player, but as a role model and a competitor who elevates everyone.
Opinion: ‘Stranger Things’ season five, a strange end to a beloved show
Released in late December after a three-year-long hiatus, it is apparent that the writers for the fifth season of “Stranger Things” had a lot to prove to please its audience. With growing impatience from a fanbase that has awaited the newest installment of the hit show, the last season carried very high expectations.
Opinion: Sopranos, the psychology of a psychopath
Although the final episode of “The Sopranos” aired in 2007, well before many of the students at Jesuit High School Sacramento were born, the critically acclaimed HBO (Home Box Office) series remains relevant nearly two decades later.
“The Sopranos” follows Tony Soprano and his mafia family in the North Jersey sect, and all the murder, racketeering, extortion, fraud, and drama that surrounds them. The show’s characterization of Tony is what makes it a masterpiece.
Opinion: love, loss and loneliness in Chainsaw Man
Perhaps the best movie to come out in October of 2025 was “Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc”. This movie, a continuation of the anime series “Chainsaw Man”, was an absolute masterpiece in terms of animation, story, and character development.
Although it took 3 years for the franchise to return after the conclusion of the anime, the wait paid off with 120 immaculate minutes of screen time in theatres. Staying true to its manga (a Japanese comic book), it presented the intricacies of the manga incredibly well.
The Superb Performance of “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time”
The yearly Jesuit High School Sacramento Fall Play concluded its run on Nov. 16, 2025. The play, “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time”, starred Milo Moggan ’26, the Plank’s very own Layout Chief, as Christopher Boone. His character sought to solve the murder of his neighbor’s dog, Wellington, all the while exploring his broken world through the lens of someone on the autism spectrum.
The Counter-Strike market fiasco
On Oct. 22, 2025, Valve Corporation released an update to Counter-Strike 2 that would forever change the dealings of a six-billion-dollar free market. So what is this market? Is it stocks? Is it Valve’s online video game store, Steam? It turns out it’s neither – it’s Counter-Strike skins.
In its over 11 year history, the “Counter-Strike 2” skin market reached a monumental market cap of $6 billion. Yet, after a seemingly innocent update, the total market value was cut in half to just 3 billion dollars in the course of 24 hours.
Has tipping gone too far?
Since when has ordering food become so out of control?
Before COVID-19, tipping was a luxury afforded to waiters in order to supplement their wages. I never had to worry about staring a cashier dead in the eyes as I selected “no tip” and feeling bad afterwards for not giving 20% more to the price I was already being gouged. Yet it seems that in the aftermath of COVID, having a tablet flipped around is the norm for every financial encounter.
Opinion: Gami Burger: A Disappointing Start
Willie’s Burgers had everything a Jesuit High School Sacramento student could ask for – good food, plenty of spaces to hang with friends, proximity to campus, and a student discount. However, in 2023, the owner of Willie’s, Stephanie Taylor, sold the location to chefs Scott Ostrander and Paul DiPerro, who transformed it into the restaurant that stands there today: Gami Burger.
