Reflection from Our President on this Historic Moment

President's Letter

Dear Families, Students, Alumni, and Supporters

In September of 1963, Jesuit High School Sacramento emerged from twenty acres of the former Horst Hops Ranch. Fr. Joseph Keane, SJ, and his Jesuit and lay companions had a vision of how that property could be transformed into Sacramento’s first Catholic Jesuit high school. And with the visionary support of the Loyola Guild, our high school took its place in the landscape and history of Catholic high schools in Sacramento, schools like Christian Brothers, Loretto, Mercy, St. Francis, Bishop Manogue, Bishop Armstrong, and eventually Cristo Rey.

Over the last 62 years, the school has thrived, earning championships, awards, and boasting notable alumni who have gone forth into the world. The school’s thriving has been accompanied by the skilful navigation of financial and enrollment challenges as a result of demographic changes and increasing costs. What has remained constant in the face of these challenges is the presence of a board of trustees committed to their fiduciary responsibility and the school’s unwavering commitment to the mission of forming students who exemplify the qualities outlined in The Profile of the Graduate at Graduation (The Grad at Grad).

Jesuit Sacramento’s current Board of Trustees, a group of 22 individuals comprising several current parents, alumni, and alumni parents, has spent considerable time and effort discerning and deliberating on the best next steps to ensure the school’s mission richness and financial sustainability. The Trustees have charted a bold direction, deciding that in the fall of 2027, Jesuit will offer the opportunity for young women in Sacramento to experience a Jesuit education in a unique co-divisional education model – one school with two divisions. This model offers a single-sex classroom experience while providing opportunities for boys and girls to engage socially, spiritually, and in co-curricular activities on the Jacob Lane campus.

This decision to deepen the school’s mission by offering it to young women is essential to ensuring that the Catholic Jesuit tradition will continue to be an option for families in Sacramento. Jesuit Sacramento promises to yield the same benefits it has offered countless young men for the last 62 years: a legacy of vibrant tradition, a deep commitment to excellence, and a vision for leading with innovation. The school’s commitment to its Catholic Jesuit values remains constant, and we are excited to offer this experience to young women beginning with the Class of 2031.

Below, you will find our public announcement. It is impossible for a single email to cover all aspects of this development and answer all your questions. We will provide future communications offering further details about these exciting changes and inviting you to attend informational sessions where you might learn about Co-Divisional education.

We hope you join us in recognizing the significance of this moment for each member of our community. We remain deeply committed to engaging all of our Jesuit community throughout this transition, honoring your experiences and the values that have made Jesuit High School Sacramento the extraordinary place it is today. The leadership team and the Board of Trustees share this with you in the same pioneering spirit that inspired St. Ignatius and his companions when they built their first school in Messina in 1548, and when Father Keane and his companions had the vision to turn 20 acres along the American River into the campus we inhabit today.

This announcement, along with a few resources, including times we invite you to gather in conversation, will be published on our website on Sunday evening, October 5, 2025.
