Jesuit’s Accreditation process allows for growth and improvement
Every six years, the Western Catholic Education Association (WCEA) evaluates Jesuit High School Sacramento in what is known as the Accreditation process. The Accreditation process is essentially a rating system of seven selected elements found within Catholic schools across the nation. Through this process, Jesuit is credited as a private institution, allowing the Marauder diploma to carry a certain weight for universities.
Assistant Principal for Academics Mr. Colin O’Connor has worked closely alongside the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) – a subset of the WCEA that specifically accredits Jesuit – to ensure this year’s process allows for growth and improvement of the entire campus.
“Everybody is engaged in identifying areas of strength and areas for growth around what are called the standards and benchmarks for excellence in Catholic schools,” Mr. O’Connor said. “And through that kind of ground up process, we will identify what our major areas for growth that we focus for the next six years will be.”
Over the years, Jesuit has taken steps to implement the feedback the WASC has given to the school. Although many of the processes have occurred behind the scenes within the administration, there are some very obvious ways that the campus upholds the Ignatian identity.
“Some of the most obvious ways we exercise our faith daily are the morning prayer and the examen after lunch,” Mr. O’Connor said. “Teachers also demonstrate their faith when they start classes with prayer, accompany students on retreats like Kairos, or work side by side with students on immersions or other service projects.”
In addition to guiding Jesuit to practicing daily Ignatian values, the WASC evaluation has helped Jesuit heavily improve certain programs on campus, especially after COVID-19.
“We took major steps to improve students’ support resources and opportunities,” Mr. O’Connor said. “Over the span of those six years, we have increased our wellness staffing and we’ve bulked up our wellness programming resources and students have shown through feedback, through anecdotal information that those resources are welcome, needed and highly utilized.”
In the spring of 2026, representatives from the WCEA will visit campus to conduct interviews and meet with students. Jesuit encourages its students to be interviewed by representatives, and to be as honest as possible. Through these interviews, Jesuit collects vital information on how to improve campus life and the individual student experience.
