Loudness in the library

The King Library at Jesuit High School Sacramento is supposed to offer a quiet place on campus that is open for student use throughout the day. However, there’s a problem. For many Jesuit students, the library has become too noisy for focused studying, especially during community and collaboration periods. This is due to students playing games or socializing, often making it difficult for those trying to concentrate.

Mr. Josh Ford, one of the many library moderators, finds the loudness in the library inexcusable.

“I think it’s distracting to students, especially ones who are focusing on academics,” Mr. Ford said. “It’s unacceptable.”

Some students believe separating the library into different sections could help create a better balance between work and relaxation. A designated study section could allow students to focus, while another area could give space for socializing or relaxing.

“There are always people walking around,” said Steven Jeong ’28. “Right now, they don’t really force you to be productive. There definitely should be a studying section and a goofing-around section.”

While it may not be possible to completely get rid of noise, students like Steven agree that showing respect and consideration for students who are trying to study can go a long way in improving the library.

“We can’t fix the loudness completely,” Steven said. “But we can try to change it.”

Mr Ford emphasizes the importance of respect and awareness among students, even if they are not working on anything themselves.

“What needs to happen is students who go in there need to honor and respect the time that other students are giving, even if they don’t want to work on something themselves,” Mr. Ford said. “[Students should] honor and respect that someone else in there is trying to crunch for an exam, is trying to do better their academics, is trying to do something to progress their lives in that aspect and just being respectful to your neighbor out of courtesy would go a long way.”
