Showcasing student talent
Moorings is Jesuit High School Sacramento’s very own literary and arts journal. Its mission: to be a medium of expression for Jesuit students.
“[Moorings] is a literary and arts journal, so its purpose is to showcase the work of the best student artists on campus,” said Faculty Advisor of Moorings Mr. Jeremiah Loverich. “It’s published twice a year, with art, photography, short stories, poetry.”
12 years ago, however, no such publication existed. Its spark of creation came from Mr. Loverich’s experience and background.
“I have always been interested in creative writing myself – I’m a published poet, and I got my MFA in creative writing, and so that’s always been a passion for me,” Mr. Loverich said. “When I came on campus 11 years ago, Jesuit did not have a literary and arts journal. The school I was teaching at previously did have one, [so] I just started talking to different students who may be interested. We first formed an editorial team, and then it was on from there.”
Moorings’ publication requires an extensive process of review, critique, and publication. Despite this lengthy operation, Mr. Loverich finds it tremendously fulfilling.
“Combing through all the submissions to decide what we want to publish and what we don’t is challenging but super fulfilling,” Mr. Loverich said. “That’s where our critique really becomes important. Like, why is this poem good? Why is this picture good?”
Drew Eandi ’27 finds that Moorings and its process creates an inclusive and amicable environment.
“It’s friendly, very collaborative, [and] very open,” Drew said. “We’re delighted to see what the rest of our fellow students can come up with. So chatting very excitedly over what different parts of the artwork we’re viewing excites us.”
Editor-in-chief Lucas Darling ’26 believes that much of that satisfaction from working in Moorings culminates in the release of the physical edition.
“When the editions get printed, and we get to hold them after the laborious process of getting people to submit their work, putting all of that into a physical edition, designing that physical edition, and finally, we get rewarded,” Lucas said. “Being able to have a physical copy of that year’s best poetry, prose, art, photography, and music – it’s just incredibly satisfying.”
Moorings is always welcoming towards new members and offers transcript credit as a pass-fail course to those who choose to enroll.
