This fall, Ms. Erin Van Parys joined Jesuit High School Sacramento’s faculty as the new assistant for the Academic Support Center (ASC). She previously worked with students at Visions in Education, a local charter school.

Now at Jesuit, Ms. Van Parys is teaching students life-long skills on how to be a successful student in the future.

“The [ASC] room is always open,” Ms. Van Parys said. “We’re always willing to brainstorm with students to see if they have an academic support plan to help them be successful here because what they carry from high school can help them be successful in college or a job or anything beyond.”

Andrew Berglund ’26 – an ASC student since 2022 – feels that the ASC staff help his academics through one-on-one assistance.

“Teachers are there to help you if you need help and if there isn’t, there are [classmates] there that are probably taking that subject too,” Andrew said. “If you are studying for a quiz or a test, they will quiz you if you ask. If you are working on homework, it will be one on one unless someone else has the same homework, then people will tag in.”

The ASC is a place where students can receive academic assistance as well as being a place for self-discovery.

“Education is about setting students up to be successful,” Ms. Van Parys said. “And even if you have a learning difference, our job is to help students be successful and to reach their full potential. Everybody has strengths and weaknesses and our job here is to identify strengths to help support those weaknesses.”
