Vale bene, Domine Witucki
25 years of memories made. Thousands of students taught. Latin teacher Mr. Jon Witucki has made his presence known at Jesuit High School Sacramento. With undying dedication and a wealth of knowledge, Mr. Witucki has indisputably made Jesuit a better school.
Mr. Hornback believes that Mr. Witucki has displayed a high degree of professionalism throughout his teaching career.
“One [reason] that Mr. Witucki has made an impact is with his insistence on the standards of teaching, establishing clear standards and expectations,” said Mr. Ted Hornback ’83. “[He] has very clear lessons and a very clear progression of lessons that are designed to ensure the students build a strong knowledge base and a skill set based on that knowledge.”
Mr. Witucki’s journey into teaching was encouraged by his high school Latin teacher, Ms. Francis Schultz.
“Originally, I wanted to study German, but my mother insisted that I take Latin with Ms. Schultz because she knew that I would like it, and that I would like [Ms. Schultz],” Mr. Witucki said. “I loved Latin from the first day, chiefly because of the way she presented it.”
This love for Latin has been a cornerstone of Mr. Witucki’s teaching.
“The other thing that distinguishes [Mr. Witucki is] his passion for the subjects that he teaches, particularly for Latin, his love of the language,” Mr. Hornback said. “He has a passion for his subject and he conveys that to his students. He sets an atmosphere in his classroom for engagement. His lessons are designed to challenge, engage, and build.”
As Mr. Witucki prepares to step away from teaching at Jesuit, he has a bit of advice for future teachers.
“To any and all prospective teachers at Jesuit High School, choose a subject that you have always been interested in, research it well, and become the best student-centered teacher that you can,” Mr. Witucki said. “Dress your best every day; red ties denote power. Shine your shoes often. You may even be able to teach your students how to dress. Put on your sunshine face every day, no matter what is happening in your own life.”
Mr. Witucki has set a standard of excellence, exemplifying how to teach passionately and effectively. As he begins retirement, Mr. Witucki leaves behind a legacy of devotion and compassion towards his students. Vale bene, Domine Witucki.
