Mass in the gym
This feast day celebrates the miraculous appearance of Mary to
St. Juan Diego in 1531 just outside Mexico City. Tradition holds
that Mary spoke to Juan, a member of the Chichimeca people in
modern day Mexico, in his native language and asked him to
implore the local bishop to build a chapel in the place where she
appeared. To help Juan convince the local bishop, Our Lady of
Guadalupe instructed Juan to gather roses from the hill where the
chapel was to be built. This was miraculous because roses were
not in season at the time. She also miraculously imprinted Juan’s
cloak with her now famous image. Our Lady of Guadalupe’s message
of comfort and the significance of her message of God’s
solidarity with those who were marginalized in Latin America has
immense cultural and religious significance for Catholics in the
Americas. For this reason, Our Lady of Guadalupe has been
designated by the Church as the Patroness of the Americas. Jesuit
High School will be celebrating her feast day in December with an
all-school Mass in the Barry Gym beginning at 10:45
am.
