25 years of memories made. Thousands of students taught. Latin teacher Mr. Jon Witucki has made his presence known at Jesuit High School Sacramento. With undying dedication and a wealth of knowledge, Mr. Witucki has indisputably made Jesuit a better school.
Jesuit High School Sacramento’s varsity baseball team is going strong in their 2025 spring season, with a record of 18-9.
With key wins over tough opponents like Bellarmine College Preparatory and St. Mary’s High School, the team has shown its immense talent on the field. Varsity Baseball Head Coach Joe Potulny is most impressed by the team’s bond.
Jesuit High School Sacramento’s varsity rugby team is in the middle of a strong season, currently holding a 6-3 record. Over the years, Jesuit’s Rugby program has won nine national championships and sent numerous players to compete at the highest levels, including the Rugby World Cup.
Head Varsity Rugby Coach Andrew Acosta attested to the program’s tradition of success.
The 2024-2025 varsity soccer season was a year of growth, challenges, and achievements for Jesuit High School Sacramento, who ended the season with a record of 4-7-8. Despite being a largely new team, the players showed determination and unity, battling through every match to earn a playoff spot.
Contributing to this fresh team was a new coach: for the first season in 46 years, the team was without Mr. Paul Rose. Taking up this opening was Varsity Head Coach Joshua Palone ’99. Being the new face of the Jesuit soccer program, Coach Palone finished off his first season strong, fostering a competitive nature.
On Friday, Feb. 28, Jesuit High School Sacramento’s Asian Pacific Islander Club (APIC) will host its annual Open Mic Night in the Harris Center. This event offers high school students from across the Sacramento area a chance to showcase their talents, socialize with friends, and enjoy a variety of foods prepared by student clubs.
“I joined APIC last year when I was a freshman since I wanted to find a community at Jesuit that shared the same cultural similarities and experiences as me,” said Owen Hartono ’27. “Open Mic Night is a fun event where students and their families can come to watch a variety of performances, including cultural ones, such as the St. Francis’ hula team and Tinikling dance, as well as music performances from different students.”

Jayden is the epitome of a Jesuit student: he is hardworking and selfless. He has proven his value to the school through passion and utmost dedication.
On Saturday, Feb. 8, Jesuit High School Sacramento will be hosting its 15th annual Marauder Mardi Gras, formerly known as the Jazz Dinner. In a night filled with music, entertainment, and delicious desserts, the Jesuit band will be performing throughout the night to show off their skills and to raise funds for the program.
Compared to previous years, this dinner will now be showcasing other parts of the Jesuit band program beyond the jazz section, allowing for an exciting introduction to build up to the main jazz showing.
To Brady Calkins ’25, the idea of excellence evokes leadership, dedication, and hard work. He has exemplified these traits throughout his Jesuit swim career, breaking an individual school record and contributing to several school relay records.
“He has proven his skills in the pool and has set numerous team records,” said Swimming Head Coach Michael Solander. “His name is part of all three relay teams: the 200 meter Medley, 200 meter Freestyle and 400 meter Freestyle. Brady also set a new school record in the [individual] 100 meter backstroke during the 2023-2024 swim season.”
Jesuit High School Sacramento’s Film Club was created to foster a learning environment for all students interested in film. The primary focus of the club is watching films and discussing the components that make them excellent examples of cinema.
Club Moderator Mr. Ted Hornback ’83 believes the club is a great fit for any students looking to hone their filmmaking skills.
The First Annual Big Red Golf Tournament takes place on Friday, Oct. 11. The event gives alumni and other members of the Jesuit community the opportunity to connect on the Haggin Oaks MacKenzie golf course. This tournament is several years in the making, and serves as another way for people to support Jesuit.
“The purpose of the Big Red Golf Tournament is to create an annual function where alumni and Jesuit supporters can come have a great time on the golf course, talk about old times and future times, as well as help to support the great institution that is Jesuit,” Coach Morton said. “Mr. [Matthew] Ramos [’05] and Mr. [Hank] Weinberger have wanted to do this for a few years and luckily the time came to make it a reality.”
Saturday, Sept. 14 marks the 55th annual Holy Bowl at Sacramento City College’s Hughes Stadium.
After commanding victories against Rio Americano and Bellarmine College Preparatory, Jesuit High School Sacramento football is looking to secure a third victory against Christian Brothers. The pressure is on for the Marauders this year, as they have not lost a Holy Bowl since CB won 30-27 in 2019.
As Jesuit High School Sacramento’s fall sports kickoff, its cross country program, headed by legendary Head Cross Country Coach Walt Lange, looks stronger than ever.
After Saturday, Aug. 17’s intrasquad race, “The meeting of the Marauders,” Assistant Cross Country Coach Thomas Witzgall ’98 is confident that the team will excel this season.
“As a team, I think we’re probably one of the best teams Jesuit’s ever had,” Coach Witzgall said.
